History of

Since their arrival in Cleveland in 1851, the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine (CSA) have been pioneers in healthcare, education, and social services. They established the city's first public health nurses and founded Saint Joseph's Hospital in 1852, followed by Saint Vincent Charity Hospital in 1865. Their ministries expanded across Ohio and beyond, including the establishment of Providence Hospital in South Carolina. After Vatican II, the CSA refocused on social justice, healthcare, and community outreach, leading to the creation of the Sisters of Charity Health System. Today, they continue their legacy of charity, service, and faith.
