In 2024, the Upstate team demonstrated innovation in community service by partnering with Greenwood District 50 to provide daily lunches for students, serving over 147,000 meals. This initiative was crucial for students who faced food insecurity during the summer months.
As schools reopened, the team resumed health screenings. However, following Hurricane Helene’s strike on September 27, 2024, many families were left homeless and without power. In response, Healthy Learners Upstate distributed water to over 450 individuals and collaborated with local restaurant Fat Daddy’s to provide hot meals. They also worked with Greenwood County to distribute over 8,400 Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) and water, ensuring essential resources reached affected families.
Looking ahead to 2025, Healthy Learners Upstate plans to expand into Abbeville County, where 21% of students live in poverty, as well as into Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union counties.
